History of Shawe Rosenthal LLP
Shawe Rosenthal LLP has a notable legacy as a pioneer in employment law. Founded by Earle K. Shawe, one of the first attorneys hired by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), the firm was established in 1947 as one of the first in the nation to focus on representing employers. Soon after opening the firm, Shawe achieved a significant milestone by winning the first unfair labor practice charge under the Taft-Hartley Act for the Baltimore Graphic Arts Association. With the addition of William Rosenthal, the firm earned a strong reputation for effective representation in traditional labor law, an area that continues to define its practice. The firm has also been influential in shaping employment law, with Bruce Harrison being among the first attorneys hired by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission after it gained litigation authority and Stephen Shawe serving as the first general counsel of the Maryland Commission on Human Relations. Elizabeth Torphy-Donzella was the first female General Counsel for the Maryland Chamber of Commerce. Shawe Rosenthal repeatedly has been ranked as a top employment law firm in Maryland by Best Lawyers® and Chambers USA.
